Cleveland is a major city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and it is the county seat of Cuyahoga County. Known as “The Forest City” or “Metropolis of the Western Reserve,” it is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, across the U.S. maritime border with Canada and approximately 60 miles (100 kilometers) west of the Ohio-Pennsylvania state border.
The city’s population was approximately 380,000, making it the 52nd-largest city in the United States and the second-largest city in Ohio after Columbus.
Cleveland has a diverse economy based on healthcare, finance, insurance, biomedical, manufacturing, and education. The Cleveland Clinic is one of the top hospitals in the U.S. and the world, especially for cardiac care. In terms of education, Case Western Reserve University is a leading research institution.
The city is also home to a number of cultural institutions. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, dedicated to recording the history of some of the best-known and most influential artists, producers, and other people who have influenced the music industry, is one of Cleveland’s most popular attractions. Other cultural institutions include the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Orchestra, which is considered one of the finest orchestras in the world.
Cleveland is also known for its sports enthusiasm, with major league teams like the Cleveland Indians (MLB), Cleveland Browns (NFL), and Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA) having substantial followings. The city has been host to several major sporting events, including the NBA Finals and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
The city also offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Cleveland’s Metroparks system, known locally as the “Emerald Necklace,” encompasses over 21,000 acres and offers hundreds of miles of walking, bicycle, and horse trails as well as numerous picnic areas, nature education centers, golf courses, and countless fishing spots.
Cleveland’s dining scene is diverse and has been gaining recognition in recent years. Its local cuisine features a blend of Midwest, immigrant, and fusion foods.
However, like many major U.S. cities, Cleveland faces challenges such as economic disparities, racial segregation, and a declining population. Efforts are being made to address these issues and revitalize the city’s economy and neighborhoods.
